This Month's Message:
Sitting around and waiting to feel like participating in life is
simply not going to happen. It is the
action of participating that creates the joy
of doing. This month's article demonstrates some steps on the decision
to take action or not.
The article is titled:
Changing Views; The Illusion of the
Downtime

The real voyage of discovery consists not in
seeing new
landscapes but in having new eyes.
Proust
Marcel Proust (1871-1922) earned fame, if not fortune,
writing the
longest novel in existence, Remembrance of Things Past.

Depression: Shock Therapy
Susan (not her real name) was a beautiful, loving
and wonderful friend who fell into a deep
depression that seemed as though it would never let up. She was funny and
intelligent and I loved our deep philosophical conversations.
The Wave Riders book was not yet released as I
watched her fall into the abyss and knew no
one could reach her there. (Susan is part
of the reason that I rushed to release the book. ) Only months after I
had learned of her depression, I saw her in the local mall. She had
gone in for shock therapy and could not remember much about
our last meeting and many of the things that we had done.
My gut wrenched at the thought that MAYBE if she
could have learned to utilize the
steps in the book that MAYBE she would not have
lost the precious memories that we had shared. Her lifeless eyes
stared blankly at me and I wanted to cry. I have not seen her for a very long
time and from what I understand from reading that her memory, or most of the
missing memories can return but I still wonder if convulsing the brain is the
way to go.
When we first read The Wave Riders we begin to see
things a bit differently and we begin to
take back control. This new understanding does
not mean that we will NEVER see depression again...it does mean that we will
not see it as the same. We can reproduce the conditions
for depression every time we break our personal rules of not balancing the
body with the brain.
It is not easy to turn around years of habitual
negative behaviour and you will find that
you will still struggle periodically with depression but please remember
how long you have reacted to life in a negative way
and acknowledge your accomplishments towards a life without depression no
matter how small they are. A short while ago a moment
of joy may have seemed an impossible task yet now as we work through our ups
and downs we let them slip by as insignificant.
This is similar to a man/women reaching for a
glass of water after a long trek in the
desert. One glass does not feel as though it is enough....there
will be more water...there will be more joy.
Continue to work on your patterns and your TLC
emergency system until your new positive
reactions to the world around you kick in. It will take
time but you will work to end the control that depression has on you.
I am not against medication, nor am I against
shock therapy. I am only concerned
that these are often the first steps in attempting to remove depression from
our lives. Do not give up on learning what it
is in your life that sends your spiralling downward. If you could take back
control over your life by simply changing some habits like going to bed a little
bit earlier...would that not be the best first step?
Work with a doctor who will listen to you about
your desire to through your cycles. Take medication and or shock therapy
if you and your doctor deem it
necessary...but unless you are suicidal or dangerous to others try not to
seek it as a first treatment.
I have included a few comments and website
addresses that I found on the
Internet about shock therapy. The process appears to
be easier now, than you might visualize, as they say the body no longer
convulses only the brain and it also appears to be effective where nothing
else seems to work. In particular it might have advantages
to those who suffer from hallucinations and extreme paranoia.
.....but I question could some of these
patients have learned to ride the wave? For so long now, we have been treating
a disease with drugs, talk therapy and shock therapy but we have not been
showing people how to ride the ups and downs in control of their own
emotions until now....
I believe that self-knowledge is power
against depression.

Articles from the Web
One of the unexpected benefits of transcranial
electroshock was that it provoked
retrograde amnesia, or a loss of all memory of events immediately anterior to
the shock, including its perception. Therefore, the patients had no negative
feelings towards the therapy... Between 100,000 and 150,000 patients are
subjected to ECT every year in the USA, under strictly defined medical
conditions.
Many important personalities were
subjected to shock therapy.
Among them: Insulin coma therapy:
James Forrestal (first US Secretary of Defense,
who committed suicide in 1949), Russian ballet
dancer Vaslav Nijinski,
Zelda Fitzgerald (wife of author Scott
Fitzgerald).
Electroconvulsive therapy: writer
Ernest Hemingway (who shot himself
after undergoing ECT treatment at the Mayo
Clinic), poets Silvia Plath
(who also committed suicide) and Robert Lowell,
performer
Paul Robeson, rock star Lou Reed, film actresses
Frances Farmer
and Gene Tierney, pianists Vladimir Horowitz and
Oscar Levant and
talk show host Dick Cavett.
American Psychiatry Association Website:
ECT is no more dangerous than minor surgery under
general
anaesthesia, and may at times be less
dangerous than treatment
with antidepressant medications...
Immediate
side effects from ECT are rare except for headaches, muscle
ache or soreness, nausea and confusion, usually occurring during
the first few hours following the procedure. Over the course of
ECT, it may be more difficult for patients to remember newly learned
information, though this difficulty disappears over the days and
weeks following completion of the ECT course. Some patients also
report a partial loss of memory for events that occurred during
the days, weeks, and months preceding ECT. While most of
these memories typically return over a period of days to months following
ECT, some patients have reported longer-lasting problems
with recall of these memories. However, other individuals actually report
improved memory ability following ECT, because of its ability to
remove the amnesia
that is sometimes associated with severe depression.
The amount and duration of memory problems with ECT
vary with the type of ECT that is used and are less a concern with
unilateral ECT (where one side of the head is stimulated electrically)
than with bilateral ECT.

It is our desire to get retreats and
workshops out to people where they live and when they are needed.
We need to get like minded groups that honor their creativity and do not
worship the depression together...all of this takes resources. We are
gratefully accepting donations to help bring support to The Wave Riders
learning to Ride the Waves to success!

Collectors note: All books signed December 2002 have now
become collectors items! The printer lost the layout files and the
book had to be reconstructed. We have some December issues still
in stock. The new book will be the same, but may contain minor
differences due to the reconstruction. A negative just turned positive.
