Today's Gentle Reminder - Relaxation for Men
I needed some extra input from our male readers and asked this question...
What do men do for TLC? I think you will enjoy this wonderful and eloquent note that I received in return.

Good morning Indigo,
Your questions are very good and I have always thought men are from some other planet but not sure which one. You mentioned some of the most common things men will do when they are looking to reward themselves - golf, go to the pub with buddies, work on the car or motorcycle or simply tuck themselves away. I think more and more men are comfortable with the things that in the past would deem them soft, non-masculine etc. and the term now which I have been labeled is "metro sexual". This is the term which stems from a man who is comfortable with things such as a facials, massages, going to the spa and of course looking good in nice clothes. All to often the label when someone was well groomed was that they were "playing for the other team".

I think men need to attempt to pamper themselves, because the typical ways we treated ourselves in the past are very damaging....Sunday NFL with buddies and a whack of beer and chicken wings. Of course, in many cases, I did not want to be around, even my friends, and they often thought I was being a snob, when in fact I was simply feeling down that day.

I am no expert or author but I would say to any man out there that is suffering from a down spell, to take a moment and treat themselves to a day at the SPA. This can be so rewarding and relaxing. I think all too often Wave Riders excel at many things but also put the needs of others well before themselves, which is a one of the reasons we suddenly crash. Having someone or a team of people
pamper you for a day is something you cannot put a price tag on. Not only is it relaxing but it also improves a number of things men typically avoid, maintaining your skin, getting rid of the knots in your body from stress, and enjoying various things we do not always have in our home (specialty
whirlpools etc.).

The other thing, which I have found to be difficult, is sticking to a hobby as all too often I have too many things going at once. We need to pick something, which we truly have a passion for and "stick to it". I for example tend to play several different sports at once, but never really master any one of them. This can be frustrating because we know we can play better or do better but we spread ourselves to thin. I think it is important to take a moment and think about where you get the most
satisfaction - tennis, hockey, hobbies etc and FOCUS on that one. I am not saying to not participate in many things but choose the one you have the most passion for and make it a priority. I can guarantee you will get much more satisfaction with this approach that trying to be good at everything. I for example used to race downhill with my mountain bike. The last few years I have not done this nearly as much as I used to and I miss the thrill of being able to master the trails while also having an active lifestyle.

I agree yoga and meditation are excellent for all people but some men will see this again as something too feminine (why I do not know but men often have closed minds and do not see the fact that these have deep rooted cultural meaning).

The other thing which I think is important for all people, but perhaps men in general since they feel they need to make a difference is to consider putting aside the issues we feel we are facing every day and to do volunteer work with the less fortunate. Any time I start feeling a low time coming
on, I consider volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. When I get into a low period, of course I start to lose focus on my surroundings. I force myself to realize that there are other people who are facing matters more serious and life threatening than my situation - in this case terminally ill
children and their families. Of course if we are depressed this may not be the answer for everyone but for a moment my mind is removed from thinking about my so called misery, and I feel I am making a difference in the life of a family who are facing life threatening matters.

Of course, I still like making sure my body is getting the work out needed to burn off the stress, and perhaps some of the anger which I feel inside which does not get acted on. As you mentioned, when things seem overwhelming and when we cannot change what we think need changing, there is a build up of energy and perhaps anger, which needs to be released. On a personal note, I used to turn to alcohol as means to relieve the stress and anger as it made me "happy" for a while. The problem is this also ruined some relationships which I was in.
