Many readers
of The Wave Riders find hope again. Many then find
that they begin to quick cycle with moments of high energy followed
very quickly with moments of low energy. This is because the hope,
brings on the excitement, which releases the adrenaline, that sends
you bursting out the door with lots of ideas....but because you have
read the book, you know that this is where you have to bring yourself
back. You breathe yourself down and you go too far and allow the
disbelief and fear back in, this leads back to the feelings of sadness.
You are simply learning to ride the wave and you will stabilize
this
quick cycling in a very short time... just keep practicing!
You are creating a whole new you!

I used to get upset at my girl friend when she was not grounded
and/or changed her mind about what she wants to do so often, but
your book helped me understand her better.
I like the way that you call bi-polar a gift instead of a disorder
and
I think that you are right on that. Myself, however, I prefer calling
you
guys emotional (and perhaps spiritual) athletes! An athlete can
run
a 30 mile marathon and everyone ooh's and ah's, yet no one expects
the athlete to run 30 miles every day and he/she does not expect it
from him/herself. It is understood that after such a feat the athlete will
need time to recuperate. As such, when a bi-polar person is at
his or
her peak, they can perform miracles, yet it is unrealistic to expect
that
they can stay that way all the time.

One
of the places that they found activity when using a placebo to
cure
depression was in the prefrontal cortex of the brain....
So,
what is the prefrontal cortex?
The
Human Brain
Look at your
profile in the mirror. Your vertical forehead houses
your prefrontal cortex, the most human part of your brain. It
distinguishes you from your prehuman ancestors and from other
primates living today. The prefrontal cortex is your judgment
seat and thinking cap, where you develop flexible thinking and
mental control. It is your personal time machine that integrates
the past with the present, and anticipates the future. It balances
experience with perception to determine appropriate action.
Your remarkable prefrontal cortex is where wisdom reigns. It gives
you the ability to see things from someone else's point of view,
to walk in their shoes - in a word, empathy. As religious animals,
it is our "vault of heaven."
No
wonder depression affects so much of our judgement!

Today's Gentle Reminder

As you are learning to ride the wave remember:
You will once again overextend yourself and you will, once again, find
yourself in a low period or dormant regrowth period. Do not
think
badly of yourself because "YOU DID IT AGAIN"... we all do.
It takes
time to learn where your boundaries are. It also takes time to learn
what your peak performance rules are...so... you will trip and fall again.
Just don't worry about it. You know what you have done and you only
need to remember not to beat yourself up. DO NOT LISTEN to the
thoughts of "I am an idiot for doing this again" or
"who am I kidding,
I am too old or fat or stupid or too poor or too screwed up to master
this depression. Those thoughts are as unreal as the thought you
had on the high energy wave that said "I am so good" or "I
can do
everything, be everything, see everything". Just tell
yourself.......
I am not going to listen to those thoughts right now, I am tired and I
am giving myself some rest and a great big hug.....
You will jump out of the down time much faster than if you wallow in
the unreal thoughts of depression.
